David is the Managing Director of First Principles Consulting Limited, a newly established Kenyan company to assist financial institutions, regulators and policy makers to rethink financial services in the digital age. David has twenty-five years of experience in financial inclusion, banking, and enterprise development. David was previously a Director of MicroSave Consulting (MSC).
David’s technical work focuses on developing and designing solutions for digital finance and deposit mobilisation. His work has included policy & regulation advisory services, strategic and institutional reviews, market research, pilot testing, delivery channel diagnostics and service delivery, and writing on microfinance and banking. He has experience in approximately 25 countries in Africa and Asia.
His recent work has included studying crowdfunding in Africa, sustainability pathways for innovation labs, creating a policy and regulatory framework for shared services for SACCOs in Kenya, an assignment which is anticipated to make significant advances for Kenyan SACCOs. He is working for AFRACA – a network of rural finance institutions and central banks, based at Kenya School of Monetary Studies, on knowledge management solutions and strategy to address challenges in agricultural finance in Africa.
David has created advisories on digital banking, and training in digital transformation. He has advised multiple banks in Uganda on agent banking. He has worked with Central Banks - including reviewing the Bangladesh Bank’s approach to digital finance as part of a capacity building initiative, and providing training in digital finance for multiple central banks. He has reviewed digital financial services in the country for multiple donors.
He has authored numerous technical papers and articles on banking and most recently digital banking contributing to multiple tools and training courses. David is fluent in English and has basic knowledge of Sinhalese and French. David has a Post Graduate Diploma in Bank Financial Management from the University of Sri Jayawadenapura, Sri Lanka and a Degree in Economics from the University of Leicester, the UK. He is currently enrolled in an Oxford University Said Business School e-learning course on Financial Technology.
He is currently writing and publishing a series of blogs around re-imagining financial services, themed around products and services, institutional strategy, eco-systems and policy
